This YA fantasy book is about Merinda. She is a Visha Kanya. A girl who survived several snake bites, and can now kill by kissing. until the Raja wants her to kill the boy she loves.

The concept of this book excited me because it was unlike anything I read before. I had never read anything by Breena Shields before, but the gorgeous cover and forbidden romance intrigued me.

Deadly Poison Always comes from the inside

The coiled snake and the gold paisley on the cover give it a sort of Aladdin feel, which I felt really subtly showed off the story. It was like a mix of old and new. The setting was Sudari, and in many ways had an Indian feel, to it. I felt very connected to it, and I felt the writer described the place beautifully.

However, I felt the pace of the story was very slow. It seemed that two-thirds of the book was explaining the world, and creating flashbacks, which did work, but there was very little action.

Marinda, was likeable enough, although, a little Naive. Which if I am honest begs the question.. Does her naivety make her innocent? mmm.. probably not. She never asks questions, she never rebels enough.. she’s not your typical heroine.

Now, onto Deven, to be honest, I didn’t really think enough was talked about him, and I couldn’t understand why she loved him. She didn’t exactly see much of him and he didn’t have that much of a personality to stand out. He was… meh.

The mythology of the Snake, tiger, crocodile, and bird was a great touch, but I feel that the author could have entered more of this mythology into the storyline.

Now, I don’t know whether it was me, but this book took me a long time to read, and I don’t whether it was me or the book.. I just wasn’t gripped enough to call it a page-turner, but it was an interesting read filled with so much more potential.

I understand from a Q&A from the author that it is part of a duo, and the next book is out January 2018. At the moment I am on the fence about whether I would purchase the book. Maybe after the book has sunk in a bit more.

  1. I had to agree with you on this. The pace was just so horribly slow. I did a buddy read with a friend for this one, and we both just kept commenting to each other, WILL THIS EVER PICK UP? 100% agreed about Deven. I just remember he had a cool tattoo, but I’m pretty sure that was all I felt about him, lol. Wonderful review, and you summed it up so great! πŸ˜€
